Stress, hair loss and nails: what head spa can and cannot do
In brief
Severe stress can show in hair and nails not right away but 2-4 months later. Dermatologists describe this as telogen effluvium, a temporary increase in hair shedding, and as horizontal ridges on the nails. A head spa is not meant for these conditions and does not replace a doctor. It offers something else: time in quiet, warm water and attentive hands. At HEADSPA in central Riga, Aqua Head Spa lasts from 90 min and costs from 65 €, and every ritual begins with a scalp diagnostic.

We are often asked whether a head massage can help when hair starts falling out after a hard autumn. The short answer is that this is a question for a dermatologist. The longer answer follows.
Why does hair fall out months after a stressful period?
Each hair has its own cycle: a growth phase, a short transition and a resting phase, after which the hair falls and a new one begins to grow. Dermatologists describe a condition called telogen effluvium: after a strong strain on the body, more hairs than usual move into the resting phase at the same time.
The strain can be an illness with high fever, surgery, childbirth, a sudden change in diet or a heavy emotional period. The key detail is the delay. Shedding becomes noticeable roughly 2-4 months after the event, when it is almost forgotten. That is why it is so hard to connect cause and effect on your own.
This kind of shedding often settles by itself, but only a doctor can make the diagnosis and rule out other causes. Similar signs can come with low iron, thyroid changes and other conditions that need blood tests, not guesses.
What can stress do to your nails?
Nails grow slowly, and like the rings of a tree they keep a trace of past months. After a period of heavy strain, horizontal ridges sometimes appear across the nail plate. In medicine they are called Beau's lines. Nail growth slowed for a while, and as the nail grows out, the ridge becomes visible.
A ridge on one nail can simply be the mark of a minor injury. If ridges appear on several nails at once, or nails change colour, split or lift from the nail bed, show them to a dermatologist.
Is there any evidence for scalp massage?
There are few studies on scalp massage, and they are small. We list them with their limits, so you can see what was actually measured.
- Koyama, 2016. 9 men did a standardised scalp massage at home every day using a device. Researchers measured hair thickness and saw it increase in these 9 people. This was not a study of hair loss or of stress-related shedding, and the sample is very small.
- Kim, 2016. 34 healthy women. Researchers measured stress hormones after a scalp massage. This was a short-term measurement, not an observation over months.
- Quinn, 2002. A small group of people with chronic tension headaches received neck massage. There was no control group, so the conclusions are cautious.
None of this shows that scalp massage stops hair loss or brings hair back. What can be said is narrower: one study measured stress hormones in 34 women after a scalp massage, another measured hair thickness in 9 men with a daily home routine.
So what can a head spa honestly offer?
A head spa is not a medical procedure. It is time when someone takes care of you and you do not have to decide anything. In Japan this attitude is called Omotenashi (the art of true hospitality): the host understands what the guest needs before the guest asks.
What may stay with you:
- Slowing down. Warm water, soft light, the steady rhythm of hands. Breathing tends to follow.
- Attention to your scalp. Before the ritual we look at your scalp and choose Davines or Limba care for its condition.
- The afterglow. What stays two hours later, a day later. For some it is lightness, for others a calm evening. This is a feeling, not a promise.
If the stressful period is behind you and your hair still reminds you of it, a ritual can be a pause to simply breathe out. Alongside a visit to the doctor, not instead of it.
Where does our medical background stop?
The founder of HEADSPA, Aleksandra Talikova, is a cosmetologist with a medical education and a spa specialist with a CIDESCO qualification. For us, a medical background means precision and honesty: we do not treat conditions and we do not promise what cannot be proved.
The scalp diagnostic at the start of each ritual helps us choose the right care and see whether the ritual suits you today. If we notice something that needs a doctor, we will tell you directly.
When should you see a dermatologist instead?
- Hair falls out in clumps or bare patches appear
- Shedding lasts longer than a few months or gets worse
- The scalp itches, flakes, turns red or hurts
- Ridges appear on several nails at once, or nails change colour or shape
- Shedding comes with fatigue, weight changes or cycle changes
In all these cases, start with a dermatologist. You can come for a head spa later, once your doctor sees no reason not to.

Questions and answers
How long after stress can hair start falling out?
Dermatologists describe telogen effluvium, in which shedding becomes noticeable roughly 2-4 months after a strong strain on the body. Only a doctor can make the diagnosis and rule out other causes.
Can a head spa stop hair loss?
No, and we do not promise it. A head spa is relaxation and care, not treatment. For hair loss, itching or flaking we recommend seeing a dermatologist.
What do horizontal ridges on nails mean?
Horizontal ridges, called Beau's lines, can appear after a period of heavy strain on the body, when nail growth slowed. If they are on several nails at once, show them to a dermatologist.
Why is there a scalp diagnostic before the ritual?
Every HEADSPA ritual begins with a scalp diagnostic: it helps us choose Davines or Limba care and see whether the ritual suits you today. If a doctor is needed, we will tell you directly.
How long does Aqua Head Spa take and how much does it cost?
Aqua Head Spa Basic takes 90 min and costs 65 €, Premium 105 min and 80 €, Deluxe 120 min and 95 €. Hair drying is not included in the duration.
